Oh. My. God.
It's official, I'm living in a flat with four other students. I'm an actual student ha.
Who'd have thought?
I have my first lecture tomorrow and I'm already suffering with "Freshers Flu" and had a stomach bug last week too. Great going Lauren.
Anyway, aside from that I've explored my new city a lot and thoroughly enjoyed being an "old lady", hopefully I can tell you more about this whole student deal next week.
I've also been watching American Horror Story, its really creepy and weird but I'm loving it. A lot of the television shows I usually watch with my Dad have restarted but I'm still adjusting to find time for them all.
What about the Dexter finale guys? Oh my. I cried like a little girl!
Hope you have all had a good few weeks, I'll try and be more active now I'm settled in a little better.

By Blood and Moon Child by Tracy E. Banghart - Book Tour Reviews & Giveaway

By Blood by Tracy E. Banghart

Published: 18th Febraury by Tracy E Banghart
Genre: Young Adult / Paranormal
Series: By Blood #1
Page Count: 368
Format: eBook
Source: Xpresso Book Tours

Synopsis: For 17-year-old Emma Wong, spending a summer in England should be a dream come true. Gorgeous scenery? Check. Lots of hot guys with accents? Yes, please.
Throw in an estranged mom, annoying new stepdad, and drooling baby half-brother, and it's a disaster even her favorite cherry red leather jacket can't fix. Even worse, there's (hot) live-in research assistant Josh to contend with. The only thing more embarrassing than drunk-kissing him hours after they meet? Knowing he'll be witness to her family's dysfunction all. summer. long.
But when Emma meets a mysterious girl who happens to be a Druid, her vacation suddenly promises to be far more intriguing than she anticipated. Powerful rituals, new friends, an intoxicating sense of freedom...and Simon, the sexy foreign stranger she was hoping for. It's all a perfect distraction from dirty diapers and awkward family dinners.
Trouble is, intriguing doesn't often mean simple. And Emma is about to discover just how not simple her life really is.
By Blood is a novel about the ways that blood can bind us to others - or tear us apart.

Review:
4.5 / 5 stars

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of By Blood for part of a book tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours, this will in no way effect my opinion on the book!

By Blood follows Emma Wong on her summer vacation in London, with the half of her family she isn't too fond of lately - her Mum, Vermin (baby half-brother) and Dr Mike (the new fella). Don't broken families suck? Luckily, my parents split when I was very young so whilst it probably effected me at the time, I didn't harbour any negative feelings towards either of them. Unluckily for Emma, she was old enough to witness her family get torn apart as her Mum left her and her Dad for this new man, and also to see how badly it effected her Dad too.

I feel that was worth mentioning because I remember reading the start of the book and feeling all this anger that Emma felt towards her Mum (especially when she got the cupboard room - boo hiss that sucks) and I highly doubt I would have felt that if the writing hadn't been as great as it, it has a lovely flow to it.

As mentioned in the blurb there is also another tenant in her family house - Josh. Not only is he hot, him and Emma click from day one, whether she wants to admit that to herself is a completely different story though and whilst I would like to say its frustrating when people don't recognise their own feelings, in this case it didn't bother me.

It still didn't bother me even when another guy was introduced on the scene - Simon - even if it did mean it now had one of those YA Love Triangles going on. This one I was happy to read about.

We're introduced to Simon after Emma meets a strange girl called Ash, who is part of a Grove that practise and follows Druid beliefs, interesting huh? Yes very.

I was thrilled to read about the Druid rituals (have you read the House of Night series and they perform the ritual asking and thanking the elements for strength and such? Yeah its similar to that but it adapts over time), how they effected Emma and the others, emotionally and physically, and how they adapted over time. It was really interesting and I'm afraid I can't really expand more than that because of spoilers. You have no idea how I wish I could.

Instead, lets focus on the boys. I really enjoyed the development of friend/relationships between Emma/Simon and Emma/Josh. First up Simon, *squeals*. So ahem whilst he might be drop dead gorgeous and British (represent~) is he all that he lives up to be? Is there more to his history with one of the other Grove girls? hehe. Oh yes Simon is pleasantly surprising. I can say that much. To me however, Josh is perfect. From day one. He does what he sees as the right things to do to help Emma out with her tense family situations and isn't the geeky assistant that Emma expected him to be.

As the story comes to a close, Emma learns a lot about herself, her family and the boys. It sucks that I can't really delve into these things too much for fear of giving them away, but her vacation in London is certainly an eye-opener for many parts of her life and its great to see just how much she evolves, and learns about herself from this trip.

Moon Child by Tracy E. Banghart

Published: 16th August 2013 by Tracy E. Banghart
Genre: Young Adult / Paranormal
Series: By Blood #2
Page Count: 280
Format: eBook
Source: Xpresso Book Tours
Synopsis: Before Emma's adventures in Oxford, her best friend Diana came face-to-face with a killer...
Diana Calvert is so over high school. Who cares if Olivia hates her? And David needs to forget about having a crush on her STAT. Even Emma’s crazy fashion choices can’t keep Diana entertained. All she can hope for is a dance scholarship to a college as far away as possible from too-small, too-boring, too-nothing-ever-happens New Freedom, PA.
Then Diana meets Nicholas Woodhaven. He’s pale, angry…yet weirdly charming. The more time they spend together, the more she wonders who – or what – he really is. Because he isn’t anything like the other guys she knows. Not with the whole only-going-out-at-night thing. And living with his creepy aunt. And not going to school.
Just when Diana thinks she’s got Nicholas all figured out, people in her small, nothing-ever-happens town start dying. She has to wonder – can she trust him? And even more alarming – could she be next?
A murder mystery with a paranormal twist, Moon Child is best read under the covers with a flashlight...if you dare!

Review:
5 / 5 stars

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of By Blood for part of a book tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours, this will in no way effect my opinion on the book!

I know now before I even start typing this review that I'm going to struggle with what to write and what not to because holy frak, I really enjoyed it - which always means I struggle with the review - but also I really don't want to give anything away! *cries internally*

First up, Moon Child is about Diana and basically her boredom with her small town, wanting to escape and to live a more exciting life.

Fortunately, she gets just that kind of life without stepping a foot outside of New Freedom.

Unfortunately, its not exactly the type of excitement she wanted.

It all starts the night she meets Nicholas Woodhaven. In the graveyard. At night.
He's pale skinned, wearing all black and cold to touch.
She continues to have chance encounters and meetings with him too, always at night.

You see where I'm going with this. Good.

Nicholas is great, apart from well, when he's not. He's a bit mysterious, not only in the way he acts but with what he's willing to share, and how he answers questions, this of course only makes him more appealing because Diana (and myself) want to know "why?"

WHY?

Heh, good question. But there are more important things going on here than this mysterious boy no one has met in such a small town.

Murders.

Yeah, that's right. People are getting brutally murdered, their necks mutilated and drained of blood.

Creepy huh?

This certainly isn't day to day happenings in a small town. You can put two and two together and get four if you want, or you can be in Diana's shoes (and mine) and honestly believe mysterious lil' Nicholas wouldn't be the cause of such things. Would he?

But ah yes, I love love love this book even though my heart was pretty much torn out and stomped on a bit (and neatly replaced and bandaged up) and I really recommend it because you'll probably end up kicking yourself a little bit for not making a few obvious connections, or maybe just not willing to believe them.

Haha this is great because if you haven't read the book and you're reading this you're totally going to think a few things and not be sure until you read it and on edge like I was. I feel evil, its a great read though and I really recommend it.

P.S. Don't worry the killer is caught and dealt with

P.P.S. Extra kudo's for Firefly reference.

P.P.P.S. I didn't say the V word.

Book Q&A Tag

I moved into my new place this weekend so rather than bogging myself down with lots of reviews and stuff - which I do totally have to do at some point oops - I decided to sit down and do this lovely little post instead. Ciska tagged me in this book Q&A post, so you should probably go and read hers too.

Book Q&A Rules

1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of your favourite book cover
3. Answer the questions below
4. Tag a few people to answer them too
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them you’ve tagged them

6. Make sure you tell the person who tagged you that you’ve taken part!

To start off, favourite book cover?
I'm such a cover whore I don't think I could possibly pick just one, about half of my wishlist is going off covers alone. Yeah, I'm pretty terrible. The book I'm pinning for the most are the Barnes and Noble Leather Bound Classics, give me them. All. Now.

What are you reading right now?
My Ex From Hell by Tellulah Darling and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?
Becoming Jamie Baker and the sequel probably! I'm very excited about these.

What five books have you always wanted to read but haven’t got round to?
The Chronicles of Narnia, The Name of the Wind, The Vampire Academy Series, Battle Royale and It.
What magazines do you have in your bathroom/ lounge right now?
Total Film! Its the only magazine I receive, I have a subscription to it but I'm cancelling once I get Decembers issue.

What’s the worst book you’ve ever read?
Gargoyle Addiction, my review isn't posted yet and I don't really want to go into it before then but yes, I didn't even finish it because it sat so wrongly with me.

What book seemed really popular but you didn’t like?
Paper Towns by John Green, but saying that I really enjoy half of it and that's better than none of it.

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
The Stand by Stephen King is my go too book and always will be! I loved every page.

Where do you usually get your books?
Usually Amazon, I know I should support local books and such but Amazon is so cheap how can I pick anywhere else. Now I've moved to a new city though I'm going to find my local second hand book shops and such!

When you were little, did you have any particular reading habits?
Reading until very late with a tiny lamp and totally without my mothers knowledge hehe.

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was too good to put down?
Anywhere by J Meyers, holy poop I loved that so much! and she fraking mentioned my review in her latest blog post too.

Have you ever “faked” reading a book?
Never, the only thing I have done is skimmed a book that was killing me but I listed it as DNF

Have you ever bought a book just because you liked the cover?
Yeah on more than one occasion, they usually turn out pretty good too.

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
Harry Potter, I think? I don't really remember.

What book changed your life?
Twilight. Laugh all you want, but during my first year at Secondary School I kind of stopped reading... and that continued for at least two years before I picked up Twilight for one reason or another and then became very impatient for BD's release, before moving on to bigger and better series. So hooray Twilight for getting me back in the game.

What is your favourite passage from a book?
Its from a Silver Surfer Graphic Novel and it goes something like this:
“If sacred places are spared the ravages of war... then make all places sacred. And if the holy people are to be kept harmless from war... then make all people holy.”

Who are your top five favourite authors?
5. Darren Shan
4. J Meyers
3. George R. R. Martin
2. Stieg Larsson
1. Stephen King

What books are you an ‘evangelist’ for?
A what? I really don't understand this :c

What are your favourite books by a first time author?
The Night Circus by Erin Morgernstern
Believe Like a Child by Paige Dearth

What is your favourite classic book?
Honestly, I haven't really read that many classics so I can't pick one. Nothing stands out to me,

Five other notable mentions?
So I guess this doesn't really work either.

Kinetic by S.K. Anthony - Book Blast & Giveaways

Kinetic by S.K. Anthony

Publication Date: 20th September 2013
Genre: New Adult / Fantasy / Paranormal
Series: The Luminaries #1
Synopsis: Being strong is one thing. Being an unlimited source of power is quite another.

Genetically altered by the Organization, Annie Fox takes down criminals CIA-style with her luminary strength. With nothing to mend but her broken heart, she is relentlessly pursued by her boss Derek Lake. Just when Annie is about to give him a chance, her ex-husband unexpectedly comes out of hiding.

A wanted man, Nick Logan is a cold-hearted murderer who is considered enemy number one, and orders are clear: kill on contact. He is more powerful than ever and threatens the lives of those she holds most dear. His plan? Get his hands on Annie and use her Kinetic energy to destroy them all. When Annie finds herself with an opportunity to end him, she pauses, horrified by the scars covering the face she once loved. A split second that will cost her everything…

Excerpt:

Coming to my feet, I ran into the vault and found myself at the bottom of what seemed like three floors. It was filled with storage units, all next to each other. It reminded me of prison cells, each of them with their own armored doors. I smelled more smoke coming from above, so I ran up the first set of stairs and let my nose guide me. I saw the figure trying to melt one of the armored doors, and I launched myself at him. He was ready for me, though, so I found myself thrown across the room like a ragdoll. I pretended to be injured as he approached me, and when he was close enough, I kicked his feet from under him and he fell, hitting his head on the concrete floor. I jumped on him and pinned his hands down just as he looked up at me.

And there he was, Nick Logan. My ex-husband.

I stared at the face I'd once loved, now with a patch covering his left eye and scars running all the way down his jaw. They were almost hidden under his days-old beard and wild, dark hair. His deep hazel eye looked at me, empty, daring me to speak first. I punched him.

Wishlist Wednesday (58)

Wishlist Wednesday is a book blog hop hosted by Pen to Paper where we share and post about a book that has been on our wishlist for some time, or just added, that we can't wait to get off the wishlist.

The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #1)The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #2)The Wide Window (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #3)The Miserable Mill (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #4)

The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window and The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket are all on my wishlist because I did own these books but they went walkies and I really want to read this series again!

The Bad Beginning Synopsis: In this first book, readers are introduced to the unfortunate Baudelaire children -- 14-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Klaus, and their infant sister, Sunny -- when they learn they've just been orphaned by a terrible house fire.

The executor of the Baudelaire estate -- a phlegm-plagued banker named Mr. Poe - sends the children to live with a distant relative: a conniving and dastardly villain named Count Olaf, who has designs on the Baudelaire fortune. Count Olaf uses the children as slave labor, provides horrid accommodations for them, and makes them cook huge meals for him and his acting troupe, a bunch of odd-looking, renegade good-for-nothings. When the children are commandeered to appear in Count Olaf's new play, they grow suspicious and soon learn that the play is not the innocent performance it seems but rather a scheme cooked up by Olaf to help him gain control of the children's millions.

All this bad luck does provide for both great fun and great learning opportunities, however. Violet is a budding McGyver whose inventions help the children in their quest, Klaus possesses a great deal of book smarts, and Sunny -- whose only real ability is an incredibly strong bite -- provides moral support and frequent comedy relief. Then there are the many amusing word definitions, colloquialisms, clichés, hackneyed phrases, and other snippets of language provided by the narrator (a character in his own right) that can't help but expand readers' vocabularies. Though the Baudelaire children suffer myriad hardships and setbacks, in the end they do manage to outsmart and expose Olaf's devious ways. But of course, with luck like theirs, it's a given that Olaf will escape and return to torment them again some day. If only misery was always this much fun.

Review by Nia: Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

Review: Casual Vacancy by J.K.Rowling.

Published: 1st September 2012
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company.
Genre: Adult Fiction/ Contemporary/ Mystery
Page Count: 503

Synopsis: When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Review.
4 / 5 stars.

I got this book for my birthday way back in October and put of reading it for well months, so instead I took the hulking great hardback on holiday with me. It almost pushed me over the hand luggage limit but it was worth it.

Casual Vacancy is nothing like Harry Potter. Its a completely different book which definitely has much more Adult themes (and when I say adult I do mean adult). It was a little bit weird reading an adult book by my all time favourite childhood author, whose books I've read over and over but Casual Vacancy is still well worth a look.

The book did take me awhile to get into. The constantly changing perspectives are confusing at times, especially in the beginning when you are just getting to know the characters, but once the book drew me in I just couldn't stop reading.

As I was saying about four sentences above the themes are quite adult theres rape, drugs, underage sex and many others included in this book. So if that sort of stuff isn't your cup of tea then the book is probably not for you. Theres also a lot of plotting and infighting between the families living in Pagford which can get a little tiring at times. Shirley and Barry Mollison are the worst for this and when I was reading from either perspective I found myself feeling ashamed for them. Although to be quite honest I didn't like many of the characters, but I feel like that is what this book is meant to do. Its strips the characters bare and reveals all of their secrets, and by the end the only character that I liked was Krystal Weedon who I started off really disliking.

This book is definitely worth reading. Although I found it a hard read in the beginning once the book had drawn me in it became unputdownable. The one thing I would advise against is picking it up because its a J.K. Rowling book, instead pick it up because you like the blurb and you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Conjure (Tethered, #2)Model Misfit (Geek Girl)

Conjure by Jennifer Snyder is the sequel to Catalyst which I recently read and I really can't wait to read what happens next and learn more about our mysterious Theor, Geek Girl: Model Misfit by Holly Smale is the sequel to Geek Girl and again another series I need to know what happens, I hope Holly has learnt from her mistakes and her modelling career goes smoothly!

Conjure Synopsis: Sometimes to understand the present you have to conjure up the past...
The last thing Addison Harmon needed was to become tethered to the broody, often seemingly cold, Theo Van Rooyen, but that's exactly what happened. Forced to partner up with Theo to figure out a way to break the tether, Addison soon realizes she may have bitten off more than she can chew.

Geek Girl: Model Misfit Synopsis: “My name is Harriet Manners, and I am still a geek.”
Harriet knows that modelling won’t transform you. She knows that being as uniquely odd as a polar bear isn’t necessarily a bad thing (even in a rainforest). And that the average person eats a ton of food a year, though her pregnant stepmother is doing her best to beat this. What Harriet doesn't know is where she’s going to fit in once the new baby arrives. With summer plans ruined, modelling in Japan seems the perfect chance to get as far away from home as possible. But nothing can prepare Harriet for the craziness of Tokyo, her competitive model flatmates and her errant grandmother’s ‘chaperoning’. Or seeing gorgeous Nick everywhere she goes. Because, this time, Harriet knows what a broken heart feels like. Can geek girl find her place on the other side of the world or is Harriet lost for good?
